...(Bolshevik) power over information services and the press. The Russian Soviet leaders had their sights gaining control of the farms from the Ukrainian land owners. Soviets looked down on the Ukrainians and felt they were not worthy of equal rights or deserving of their own culture.
Despite the pressure from the controlling fanatics who wanted to take over the farming operations the Ukrainians were not willing to easily give up their traditional ways. This stepped up the pressure and most of the cultural elite were exterminated or imprisoned. Churches were burned and leaders of many professions and intellectuals disappeared. Music performers were not allowed to entertain. The whole region was under lock down.
Many feel this story being suppressed to prevent embarrassment to the groups involved. If so, it continues to be an insult to the Ukrainian people and the survivors of this genocide.
Apologies are long overdue from the new leaders as those responsible have all expired.

The Ukrainian genocide has been referred to as the Holodomor (or Ukrainian Famine 1932-33). Perhaps it is because after years of suppression Ukrainians are not as adept at production of publicity about their suffering.
We have borrowed the word “Holocaust” (which means “Completely Burnt” when translated from its Greek origin) to describe this crime against the Ukrainians. Needless suffering, mass graves and shrunken corpses were commonplace and yet the Communist regime and people involved have never been punished.
The website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_famine contains further details and opinions on this black stain in history. It contains detailed accounts of the Ukrainian Holocaust and the history related to understanding this Soviet Crime.
